I don’t wanna sound weird/racist, but the “contemporary true crime podcast” genre emanates a sinister MSNBC liberal whiteness I can’t properly articulate. Is this off-base?
Only good true crime podcast is
because it focuses on bourgeois/systemic crimes
You have to subvert the genre to make something that isn’t ghoulish. In the same vein, I’d say Murderville is alright because the “true crime” in question is a negligent or deliberate wrongful conviction rather than the murder they’re convicted of
True crime podcasts are crime porn for suburbanites.
The media amplifies and sensationalizes random violence, creating a continuous stream of small and impersonal traumas in its largely suburbanite audience. They understand their complicity in the violence on a subconscious level, but cognitive dissonance prevents them from accepting this on a conscious level. This creates a feedback loop where they repeatedly seek out content to retraumatize themselves in an effort to regain control of their place in these narratives.
But yeah it’s mostly some white people shit.

its scary stories to tell in the dark but for upper middle class white libs who are (comparatively) alienated from violence by their own money

I used to stare at those pictures before bed so I’d have cool nightmares. It never worked.
lol that rules, i’m surprised i never thought of that bc those pics ruled.
i knew someone who made some screenprinted shirts with the artwork on them but i never hit him up before he moved away :(
In my experience this is correct, my grandma was in her 80s watching murder documentaries in a neighborhood where the cheapest house was like 250k lmao
That may be generally true, but in my experience it is mostly women (not all ‘white’) who listen to it. I think it is a way of dealing with the the anxiety of being a woman in a world that makes them unsafe.
The podcasts don’t give safety tips, or offer self defense courses or practical advice. They revel in salacious drama and personal details of murder on a libidinal level. Let’s stop with this bullshit myth that true crime is “to protect oneself from murder”. It’s entertainment and titillation not serious defensive studies let’s be real.
I revel in violence too sometimes in my entertainment, in video games and action movies. But I don’t use real “true” violence to get off, I use fake and fictional violence at least
I’m not saying people listen to it for safety tips. I’m not even saying it’s healthy or good. I think it’s a kind of morbid fascination.
yes a morbid, libidinal titillation and excitement. an unhealthy obsession with and fetishization of serial killers
No when I think “true crime podcast listener” I think “white woman with no personality”

Yeah it just seems so very voyeuristic in a way. Especially the concept of real existing peoples hardships with crime, the criminal justice system, socioeconomics, all that jazz put on display for entertainment feels to put in a word: yucky. It seems like a view steps from human-zoo shit. Like just watch reality tv, at least those people sign up to be a mess for your entertainment.
American Psycho type beat

not at all. in fact i think i am fully justified in saying that the average true crime podcast is EXACTLY like The Turner Diaries for white women.
Yup (you are right)
Red handed are just awful. I’ve listened to enough of it to know.
Yeah, one of the hosts of LPOTL also just got sacked for being a weird abusive mess. Time for a true crime podcast about true crime podcasts.
> Last Podcast on the Left
> They’re not on the left at allwell yeah that’s because they’re referencing the horror movie instead of politics
wtf is a movie. is that that thing that zizek hates.
Marcus has said some pretty based shit before and Henry’s been on Chapo so I hold out hope
Marcus’s anticommunist statements a year or two back were likely my final straw. He was talking about doing an episode on Mai Lai shortly after and I didn’t want to be there for it. The noticable drop in quality preceding that and the sycophantic fanbase was also a factor, in addition to the overall sleezy nature of true crime.
He also had the least input on that show and was in no way funny. I honestly do not know what he actually brought to the team.
The more recent episodes I bothered to listen to it is clear that Marcus and the funny one were sick of his shit and openly mocked him for his stupid takes and attempts to be funny
The funny one is Henry.
Worked on fox news too
Yeah, that was always a red flag for me. That an his mind-numbingly stupid takes on everything.
Isn’t that the one that tried to run for office in NYC?
Came in 6th for a 3 way race
He defo tried somewhere
LPOTLPOTL
I haven’t listened to LPOTL in about five years, and I was only really a listener for a two year period starting in 2013, but I remember that Kissel hosted a political show. Just looked it up, and he was still hosting it as of September of this year, with almost 750 episodes. I listened to two episodes, probably in 2014, and based on my hazy memory of that I’d call him a bizzaro left-libertarian type.
What I’m saying is, this isn’t a surprise.
Also I distinctly remember there was an early episode where they made a big deal out of them being a podcast with no corporate backing, and then sometime after I’d stopped listening I learned they made a deal to host their show exclusively on Spotify.
I listen to them but have no social media presence can you link me to something that explains what happened with Ben i have only what was said on the show

Thanks, that sucks big time. I was never the biggest fan of Ben but it certainly puts a stain on the reputation of the podcast for me at least
What is the next influencer face going to be for thumbnail SEO purposes? Surely the face can’t last forever
I hope we go back to the era of fursonas.
Apparently open mouth thumbnails aren’t popular with gen z, it’s closed mouth smiles or smirks or whatever now

Oh good behaving like a normal human being is back in style now, awesome
Sadly not. It’s a weird bleached teeth pained grimace of a smile.
yes it can, it’s optimized to get clicks from children, who are simply too young to know any better
Once again proving the most ethical podcast has always been Cumtown
You could have switched out that picture with several other True Crime people and I would have believed it in equal measure. Last Podcast was a comfort after working doubles and shambling home after working myself to death for shit pay in catering. The shouting, the bad jokes, the lurid stories. There’s an appeal to be sure, but it really would be best if by and large all these true crime podcasts and shows just kinda dropped off entirely.
The only True Crime podcast I support is “Only Murders in the Building” (it’s pretty funny, watch it)
whoever these people are i wish them the worst
true crime parasites are fucking awful
