The ruling comes after a group leading a petition for Alberta independence said it had gathered enough signatures to trigger a province-wide vote.

And Smith is ready to appeal. For someone who claims not to be a separatist, she sure acts like a separatist.

She also attended separatist leader David Parker’s wedding. And she lowered the total number of signatures required for his petition and ignored the Forever Canadian petition that was verified last year, which has almost half a million Albertans signed.

She is truly a seditious sack of shit. That smug look she always has on her face is infuriating.

Don’t insult sewage treatment plants. They’re vital infrastructure.

I think it’s less that she’s a separatist and more that this is likely the only avenue she has to hold onto power.

The cons are not polling especially well right now among normal people here.

Calgary recently had one of the highest property tax increases in history, and the cost of living here is at a record high, but the usual UCP strategy of blaming Ottawa is failing because Carney is the kind of leader most of the people who vote Conservative actually want.

I think you’re generally right, but for a different reason.

I don’t think she wants to separate. I don’t think she thinks it’s possible, either. Support for separation is laughably low, and as time wears on is actually getting lower. Even if it had high support… she wouldn’t want it. She’s a “good times” leader, and already has demonstrated she’ll bail on politics if her own situation is anything but optimal. Like, she doesn’t have anywhere near the level of commitment required to birth a nation, that shit would be actually hard work. It’s not for her.

But… keeping that pot stirring? That she’ll do indefinitely. It’s all she knows how to do. It’s all about playing up some kind of lost cause narrative. Big bad Ottawa. She needs the foil. She has nothing without it.

Side note, I think she intentionally torpedoed PP in the federal election with her US podcasts. She wanted him to lose. Without a boogeyman in Ottawa she has no fucking cards.

“As per polls”. This just means they hired a company and told them which results they wanted so the company made sure to ask the right poll questions to the right people. Polls are the farthest thing from the truth and are only used to sway public opinion while fooling people that this is what most of the populous are thinking.

Im amazed in 2026 people still take polls seriously.

You pay for a pre determined result, they poll <1000 by cherry picking then media says “most Canadians think…”

The Alberta government recently amended its laws to remove a requirement for citizen-initiated referendums to be constitutional. 🤪

Sounds like the citizens need to initiate a referendum to make it so that citizen initiated referendums need to be constitutional again
