I am confused. Why does the woman in the black shirt think the woman in the white shirt cannot speak Japanese?
Right column first, left column second, black shirt woman is speaking in Japanese in the second panel, white shirt woman goes “?” in the following third panel. Then in the left column, black shirt woman speaks French.
It took me a bit because of the reading order. I tried right, left, right left first but it’s all right then all left. Makes a lot more sense that way
Basically, whenever you see a column of four panels like this, just read it top to bottom, right to left. This is a standard form within manga called a 4-koma. There are whole series written exclusively in this style though they tend not to be as popular outside Japan. One of the more recently popular is Tomo-chan Is a Girl!
