“Boulder police are investigating the traffic signs as criminal tampering.”
“I appreciate the fact that it’s drawing attention to the fact that we’d like people to slow down and not be on their phones, but there’s probably, again, a few more appropriate ways about getting that message out.”
I’d love if they implemented whatever appropriate ways they have… then again they said appropriate, not effective.
Person put up signs tell people not to kill people with cars. Police say that’s criminal tampering.
It is criminal tampering. It’s also great and should keep happening. [0]
I’ve been told by giant truck drivers that “kids shouldn’t have been in the street” and “where were the parents” in response to news stories of literal kids being run over. Fuck their “not appropriate messaging”, kids are dying and they’re worried they may not be able to put on their extra tall lift kit.
Same thing with school shootings. “Oh it’s not appropriate to talk gun violence right after”. Well when the actual fuck is it okay, Martha? Maybe these people should feel a bit called out.
“where were the parents”
Oooh, that grinds my gears. We all know helicopter parenting is harmful for children, but people freak out whenever kids are outside without a helicopter parent. It reminds me of the mother who was arrested for letting their 10 year old be outside unsupervised (cops said it wasn’t safe for the kid to be outside on their own)
Then those are the same people whining that kids are on their phones all day and never get exercise or go outside like “back in our day” 🙄
These people weather intentionally or not are just advocates for Human suffering. The more this goes on and the more blatant it becomes the less inclined I am to believe that they’re useful idiots, rather that they are willing accomplices.
On so many levels everything about our society needs to be burnt out. No one should tolerate our openly sadistic society.
Like life in general, there has to be a balance.
You can be not a helicopter while also teaching your kids not to go into the street.
Stop de kindermoord
Fuck decorum. I give negative damns about it given the extensive history of it being used as a shield to protect the facilitation of what amounts to mass murder. If dark skinned foreigners did ten percent the damage cars do we’d have used some of the nuclear arsenal but because it’s fucking profitable innocent people die every day and little, if anything, is done about its root causes.
Hah, your 10% is terrifying realistic.
Over 40,000 people die per year from motor accidents in the US.
9/11 was 3k.
But for some reason trying to convince people that we need to treat our car culture like an emergency of the utmost importance and priority the same way we would react to another country murdering random people like 9/11 and I’m being crazy.
Just did some quick checking… it looks like the War on Terror as a whole averages well below the automotive catastrophe annually if we’re looking at even the broad anti-terrorism coalition.
- Everyone comes out to 45k
- Everyone but terrorist combatants cuts that to 30.5k
- Cutting terrorist combatants and civilians brings that to 10k
That’s just sad for a lot of reasons.
Yeah,
I’ve taken to saying that we don’t live in a great country, nor a good one, or even an acceptable one. No, what we have is one that should be put out of our collective misery.
@ericbomb remember when six people died from black market weed vapes and the government banned flavored e-cigs?
Ugh we could probably talk all day about all the things the government intervened on for perceived dangers, and just ban something random to make it look like they addressed the thing.
If I go up to a politician and say “I need your help to ban a product that has killed 20,000 people this year! Will you take my cause?”
They’d act super enthusiastic until I say it’s private pick up trucks.
They’re very consistent about this. It’s logically impossible for them to care less about the plight of the people. They’ve likely never cared to begin with or had conditioning over time to cease caring. No, their only concern is the continued profitability of their donors. No matter how many people that kills.
E-cigs and legal weed could be competitors to legal cigarettes. You know the abhorrent fucking things so bad they’ve “banned” them from advertising but would you look at that, they’re allowed to air PSAs about how bad they are… and make them so “incompetently” that they serve as advertisements for their vile product.
They never have and never will care about us. So, why the fuck do we tolerate them?
People are emotional. All of us, more or less. Some people also sometimes have other ways of engaging with the world.
But cars are emotional for people. So was 9/11. Facts don’t really matter.
So when you tell someone something bad about cars, they have an emotional response and that’s game over. Especially if they see you as out-group.
I don’t know how to fix this but I think it’s the root of all of our problems.
Maybe if we can get people to see experts as in-group again?
Decorum and etiquette are but the genteel masks of a violent authority
NSFW Traffic Signs
Telling people to not kill kids is not safe for work in USA? …what does people in USA exactly do in work? O_o
“Get Off Your Damn Phone.” “Slow The Fuck Down.”
What is even NSFW in the first one, unless it’s traumatic event for them to get off the phone?
And in what job you don’t hear or say “fuck” at least some?In some parts of the US, people are very sensitive about ‘goddamn’. It can be a cultural shock to first come across this, but it’s serious religious stuff to them.
When you work with christian fanatics (i.e., anywhere in the US) in an office that “respects religious diversity,” bullshit cultural norms are enforced.
I work out of an office within sight of a megachurch- and spend as much time in the field as possible.
There is probably some legality involved. Signs have more than informative meaning, where not pursuing this officially has broader ramifications.
Just the unauthorized visual distraction factor can be used as a means of argument in court until the matter has precedent in case law established.
See if that was actually a standard for driving, I’d understand.
But we have billboards, decorations, floppy men, people dancing on the side of the roads.
If all that is allowed, I can’t really be offended by a sign saying “don’t kill people” as a form of protest.
We have fucking digital billboards in my town which is basically an outdoor TV. It is so bright at night it can light up the street. It’s way too distracting to have on a roadway, people get distracted trying to to watch a full advertisement. The ads are similar to how fast food menus are constantly changing and showing close ups of food and deals. This should 100% be illegal next to a roadway, hell they are diatracting enough inside the store sometimes.
Ugh that probably kills night vision of drivers.
It’s so annoying that even with obvious safety changes we can’t get people on board. Like just getting people to not have overly bright lights that blind folks some how is so hard, when that seems so simple.
The worst about this particular sign is it switches between dark colors and bright colors, which seems to make the blinding light even worse and more distracting. Somehow a company’s right to advertise is more important than safety, even admist a crackdown on distracted driving. Only the phone screen is bad i guess? Cantdo anything about outdoor signs or auto manufacturers putting ipads into the dash.
Legal counter point, I can put up literally any sign on my property. In most states I can put up nearly any sign on public property without permission. See: any flyer stapled to a phone pole or any political sign on a corner.
The actual case here is the fact they tampered with public property without permission by permanently affixing their sign to the pole. Which is at most a fine.
I expect if it were on it’s own post it would be fine.
Obviously, I am not a lawyer.
Not to mention billboards, whose only purpose is to distract drivers and take their eyes off the road.
Put the sign on its own post in front of the city one and maybe they’ll let it be
Police: “You can’t tell people to obey the law! Only we can tell people to obey the law!”
I hope they will have a good attorney and understanding judge.
Or that none of their neighbors are narcs!
This is funny and they are just right.
I’ve lived in Boulder and can say definitively that the neighbors are narcs.
Even if correct, aren’t official looking signs going to confuse and distract drivers?
They’d need to look up from their phones, first.
I mean, if we care about confused and distracted drivers I have a LONG list of things I would put over caring about before this.
An extra street sign wouldn’t register on my worry list.
If you’re confused about whether you should not kill any kids today, driving might not be for you.
Do you travel by car much? There’s lots of weird regional signs that only exist in certain counties. Not even a concern.
Like all the other official signs? They look official too.
Well, some of these I do like. Not all of these signs are particularly helpful though
I mean I’m never gonna hate on people who are peacefully/harmlessly protesting the amount of car deaths in the US.
Now if they started slashing tires randomly I’d disagree.
If they started slashing tires of people who killed/maimed another person from reckless driving, or regularly drives drunk and never got more than a slap on the wrist… well vigilantism is not something I will participate in at the current time. But I couldn’t judge them.
If this is nsfw then I wonder what the australian tac ads count as. (Literally showing people getting hit buy cars and flung up into the air to there death)
I don’t need a PSA about that, my intrusive thoughts play that in my head already!
One of the signs said “Slow The Fuck Down.”
Of course, by “person”, you meant “pleb”. 🤌🏼
