        Incidentally, a friend of mine recently got dog piled in an lgbt discord for saying to someone who wanted to crossdress “if you want to be femme just go for it”. People freaked out and piled on her saying that femme is an important word to lesbians and you shouldn’t use it that way. She got really affected by it for a few days.

        Here in the UK femme gets used pretty much interchangeably for “feminine” and I wondered if this is an american thing or just a weird insular lgbt discord communities thing.

          I wonder, I use it the same as your friend. Like when shopping at op shops (thrift stores) here, the clothing racks are sorted by femme/masc

            Yeah it just sounds like really over the top concern dogpiling to me. “Noooooo you can’t use that word like that it is only for lesbians” is really just wrong and older generations are only familiar with the word through “femme fatale” which is never anything to do with being gay.
