Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•What Americans in a 1998 poll expected to happen by the year 2025
8·6 days agoI don’t think so, I believe Biden is the real reason Harris lost. She had too much ground to make up for Biden’s stubbornness to realize he was a weak candidate. Trump’s entire strategy was based on how weak Biden was and the party turning against him in the 11th hour only reinforced Trump’s claims. Kamala was doomed from the start, I believe she could have won if she had taken the lead from the start of the race. She wouldn’t have been my first or even my second but I still think she could have won if Trump didn’t have a head start and Dems taking so long to pull their heads out of their asses.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
76·10 days agoShort answer is nope.
If you mean for political reasons, no, because unless Trump succeeded in creating dynasty that many people are talking about then there is hope that someone will step in and force the government back in the right direction. So this will be a temporary setback.
Now when I mean set it back in the right direction I don’t mean back to the far left either, I mean I hope for a reasonable rational leader willing to work to a better future for all Americans. Both sides have lost what it means to work for all Americans as the president of the USA and not just their party extremists.
As an average low middle class American, life isn’t terrible but economic insecurity and living costs are becoming a major issue that is directly connected to Trump. Cost is up 30% in the last year, privacy is under attack again, consumer protections are being stripped away, environmental protections are being removed, general infrastructure investments are being defunded, public relief and assistance being removed, AI is out of control, and there are fewer jobs being created. While Trump lies and tries to cover it up, he is actually firing people in the government or refusing to release negative data to the public in an effort to cover it up. He is actively silencing people which goes against a core American belief that this country was founded on.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Maybe the RAM shortage will make software less bloated?
211·11 days agoThe “shortage” is temporary and artificial, so that’s a hard NO. The ram shortage doesn’t present any incentive to make apps more efficient because the hardware and software that is already in people’s homes won’t be effected by the shortage and people who currently use the software won’t be affected by the shortage. The very small percentage of people that will be affected by the temporary shortage wouldn’t justify making changes to software that is currently in development.
There’s no incentive for software companies to make their code more efficient until people stop using their software so stop using it and it will get better. Just as an example Adobe reader is crap, just straight up garbage, but people still use it so the app stopped getting improvements many years ago. Then Adobe moved to a subscription based system, and cloud service for selling your data but guess what, it’s still the same app that it was 10 years ago, just more expensive.

We would go to Folk’s or TGIF or O’charlys or a local tavern, as long as you weren’t ordering beer or steaks, it was do able.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•What game recently hooked you on the Deck, more than on PC ?
1·13 days agoIt’s a little slow but Northgard is a fairly slow game anyway so it balances. I use the track pad and triggers like a mouse and use the stick to move the camera, you have to play around with the mouse speed until you dial it in, takes a little getting used to but it’s definitely do able. If I have time and a table I also have a Bluetooth mouse that attaches to my bag.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•What game recently hooked you on the Deck, more than on PC ?
1·13 days agoIt’s slow using the touch pads or touchscreen but I have The Mechanism Bag and attach a mouse to it, the bag holds the Steam Deck, mini folding keyboard, wall charger and a battery pack. For extended trips or for small parties I bring a USB monitor and extra controllers that go in a backpack.

Technology@lemmy.world•The dominoes are falling: motherboard sales down 50% as PC enthusiasts are put off by stinking memory pricesEnglish
27·13 days agoThat’s every company, most upper management don’t stay in one position for more than 2 years. So the system is setup for short term gains because investors aren’t interested in long term investments and the blowback is the next guys problem. Who then is looking for the next big win to cover up the last guy issues without fixing anything. Then they bring in someone to clean up the mess and the cycle starts again.
Plus most consumers have short memories or don’t have an alternative so their stuck. There are small groups holding on but for 75% of the world’s population right now it’s Android or iOS, AMD or Intel, AMD or NVIDIA, Samsung or WD or Seagate or SanDisk, Att or Verizon, Apple or Microsoft, and so on.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Internet-Connected Consoles Are Retro Now, And That Means ProblemsEnglish
6·15 days agoThe only way I see this sort of working is getting people together similar to Abandonware and either making emulators or someone figuring out how to fake the server authentication on a local PC for a console to ping. It would probably send the console manufacturers into a frenzy, especially Nintendo.
I can see the hardware part being easy enough, a miniPC for $200-$300 or an older junker PC running Linux from storage and a CAT6 from the console to the miniPC. The hard part would be figuring out what every single game needed to authenticate itself.
But where it really falls apart are systems that only partially run on the local console or require lots of online players to even function. So anything after Gen 7 or 8 probably wouldn’t work or would be very limited.
I’m hoping that by installing all of my game discs and updating everything before putting it away that it will remain somewhat functional if I pull it out of storage. I will give is a little more time then try it, so fingers crossed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Devastated PC builder orders DDR5 RAM from Amazon, receives DDR2 and some weights — counterfeit 32GB kit a worrying sign of rising return and sales fraudEnglish
11·16 days agoWhy put a weight? DDR2 weight vs DDR5 weight difference wouldn’t be noticeable until they put the weight in because now it would weight 3x what it should. I suspect the person claiming fraud is the one committing fraud or this is a fake article.
