    Seriously, though… Direct donations of bulk foods can drive down the local cost of food, which makes local farming unprofitable, which means local farmers have a hard time staying in business and supporting themselves, which means you’re going to end up with fewer farmers and more long-term food insecurity.

    Like … how is a local farmer growing corn supposed to compete with free bags of corn shipped from the US? He’ll have a really hard time making any money off of growing corn. So he’ll probably quit growing corn and do something that’s better able to support him and his family … which might not be growing food at all.

    And then this cycle results in dependence upon US food imports. With few local farmers in operation, these food aid packages are the only source of food. And this can make them very vulnerable to the whims of US foreign policy if the US decides to use giving or withholding this food aid as a bargaining chip in negotiations … or if they just happen to elect some asshole who arbitrarily and illegally cuts the food aid for no reason at all.
