You can easily sideload kobos if you plug it into a PC as per these instructions

You can also use Calibre to easily upload any ebooks you find lying around.

You can also easily add custom fonts that are dyslexia friendly and you can easily adjust font sizes.

I love it, had one since 2013ish. It uses ePub format which is pretty open access. Easily connects to my libraries. Lots of independent published books. Etc. And most importantly it isn’t Amazon

They have some that are closer to tablets with e-ink colour which is interesting and the ability to write in books.

bookshop.org has been around for a while now.

They have probably THE strongest DRM on the market. Maybe if/when they add kobo support there might be a workaround, but you are moving from one platform with locked down ebooks to a different platform with locked down ebooks.

Don’t get me wrong. I really like bookshop for the purposes of still supporting-ish my local book store without needing to swing by at lunch to pick up a book I pre-ordered. But… they are probably a really bad sign for where ebooks will be in a few years since they entered the market “late” and don’t have legacy contracts.

This is precisely why I don’t use them. I was so, so bummed when I found out they were as bad as Amazon for DRM.

My ebook preferences are Libby followed by Kobo.
