Vietnamese here. When the communists got into the villages/cities they got a list with them and some local snitch. Everyone was on the list was rounded up, shot then buried in the mass graves. It was systematic murder.
This is the kind of stuff people that glorify the Viet Kong as some kind of freedom fighters conveniently ignore. They were fucking evil. Literally all belligerents in that war were.

It’s been a while since I read into the topic, but I remember that the Vietnamese Government and non aligned investigators believe there was no massacres in Hue City. That it’s US propaganda.

The mass graves unearthed full of civilians were 1. Not civilians but National Liberation Front fighters and supporters because they weren’t uniformed like the PAVN and once dead looked like civilians and 2. Civilian killed by the USA in their suppression of the uprising.
