CINCINNATI (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER) -Cincinnati immigration attorney Trisha Chatterjee had a problem. She needed to ask U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement how best to submit paperwork for her clients detained at the Butler County Jail.

Our media partners at the Cincinnati Enquirer say that after days without a response, she finally got through to an ICE officer who said he could give her the phone number for someone who could help.

Chatterjee said the number was for a Columbus-area Taco Bell.

That’s still a terminal case of lawyer brain, thinking the death camp guards will help you with your paperwork. Does anything about this situation make anyone believe that this is something that paperwork will solve?

I mean I was giving an answer to the question regardless if what the person was doing was going to be effective or not.

Obviously there are people who do still believe in the system and that it will work as intended. Many have KNOWN that it’s corrupt, and many are still learning. It is still her job, regardless of where she falls on that spectrum, to advocate for her client. I’m pretty torn on this, but my position at the moment is that we should be using every tool at our disposal to try to slow down the death machine to see what sticks. BUT, we absolutely should not delude ourselves into thinking that things will work as they are supposed to, and have complete faith in the system, if any at all. For example, I think that “know your rights” education is better than not knowing them at all. Like is it better for someone to know that they dont need to divulge any information at all without a lawyer present so then they dont, or is it better that they dont know that and spill everything they know to the pigs?

However, if that is the one and only thing an org is doing for their community, that’s not enough by a long shot
