What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?
Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

when I started here there were not many people and only some instances were big enough to interact. Have you been to .ml? only crazy ppl. So I came to world and prayed for the best
while there might be some crazy people like that man of them have different options to the status quo and provide me with food for further thought. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything there, but that thay the same with any instance.
i find how we are in this world isn’t because of the likes of the opinions on .ml bit the apathy and opinions of the average voter and citizen, so normal (as in under the bell curve) is the new crazy.
an example
Susan Sontag was asked what she had learned from the Holocaust, and she said that 10% of any population is cruel, no matter what, and that 10% is merciful, no matter what, and that the remaining 80% could be moved in either direction.” — Kurt Vonnegut
this is the US now for example…
i wanted an instance that wasn’t defederated from them.
Seconing this. Plus I didn’t know that many instances, and was too lazy to change.
I went with .ml because (IIRC, I might be wrong) that was the instance that the people who made Lemmy used. I’m not wild about how .ml censors some words but it doesn’t bother me enough to change.
It would be weird to host an instance without using it…
Cuz shit just works
Always amazing when things do that
My girlfriend
Your girlfriend is on the Instance or created the instance?
She is on it
I didn’t give a shit
My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever
It’s not something that I care about, so I just did whatever
I have no idea what instance I’m on
I don’t even know what instances are, or what difference it makes
You know, I actually love reading this. People complain a lot about how complicated the fediverse/lemmy/whatever is and they cannot even sign up, yada yada. And yet here you are, not giving a damn about it all and still you manages to make an account and you are here. Kudos to you!
You are on lemmy.world
You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don’t have one, they are local to you.
I think that it depends on how you access lemmy. Iirc, voyager and some others allow you to toggle user instances (at least for comments)
That sounds odd if that is an option. My doesn’t show instances if it’s the same as mine. However, since this is all federated, you can have the same username as someone else from another instance. If it doesn’t show instances then that could be confusing at best, if not used maliciously.
It’s not really locked or kept from us. We can just choose it to visually declutter.
I don’t really care what instance someone is from. If I need to know, I can just tap their name.
I don’t really care what instance they’re from, but I do care who they are. It’s like if we just went by our first names here, there would be so much confusion with common first names. You’d need to at least use their last name to know if they’re the same person or not. With federation, you can have the same name as someone else on a different instance. I don’t really care where they’re from usually, but it is important for identification.
In my opinion, this is less declutter and more obfuscation. There’s potentially important information that isn’t being shown. Often it isn’t an issue, but sometimes it is.
Yeah, also when you click on an account you see the full name and when commenting.
maintainer is from my country, rules are good and reasonable, nice local content, no local drama
I made accounts on a few instances, but I stuck with this one (and eventually joined the team) for the same reasons
That’s a good combo, especially local content. Do you ever find the local content gets lost?
i dont know, i dont pay that much attention to stuff like that so i’m not 100% sure about the drama part either, but i dont recall ever being annoyed by such things which is good enough for me. Its not extremely huge instance, around 5k users and 200 posts/ day. I think that helps too. Oh, i forgot to mention that I like admins here too, they are nice people.
I didn’t know about instances, it was the first one that popped up. 🤦
I’m a trekkie, so startrek.website it was.
Ooh, I might switch.
Welcome! Where no Lemming has gone before! 🖖
Very small blocked list and doesn’t block NSFW. Users should make their own choices. Also awesome stats every month.
This is probably the first sharkey post I see on lemmy. It looks really good, nice.

NSFW is a very generic tag. I usually browse subscribed so porn popping up is not a problem. I still want to see NSFW-tagged footage from conflicts or the occasional mild NSFW art. Photos are blurred by default so it’s not like someone will see it by accident.
Also, your client probably has an option to display NSFW posts. I don’t see any reason for an instance admin to do so.
Tee hee, funni name.

I heard people I respect talk about it in ways I enjoyed :)
The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I’m absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!
“Shit just works.” Oh good! I like it when shit just works!
After reaching out and proving I was human, the admins agreed to activate my account manually so I didn’t have to enter a valid email address.
HALT! Surprise mandatory sock inspection!
Best I can do at the moment
Still wearing my caterpillarsThis will suffice. Carry on! :)
That’s such a out of the way thing the admins done for you. It seems like sh.itjust.works is a fairly decent place for Lemmy users to go from what I’ve seen so far.
Well, it was simple, as my previous user, neidu2, had a long history of posts/comments, most of which I believe aren’t that trashy. Or maybe the perfect level of trashy for SJW, idk.
So what made you pick the same instance and username (+1)? Would it not have been okay to stay on the same account?
I instance hopped for a while, just to test things out, really. Feddit.nl is alright, except people kept assuming I was dutch (although, I’ve been called worse things)
Well the german feddit.de stopped working where I initially was after the reddit exodus thing. Feddit.org became the best successor. They have a sensible block list and a lot of german and european communities so I like it here. And I think the mod team is doing a pretty good job
I was looking over instances sorted by uptime, saw one that had high uptime, a lot of users, and a literal promise that shit will just work in its name. I did a bit of scoping to see that it was easy to view communities across all instances from SJW and figured, fuck it, seems like as good a choice as any.
