Yeah in the books he sits on it for a long while. The movies cut that out cause who has the time?
I did find it weird the extended extended cut increased the already long run time to a record breaking 17 years and 10 hours long movie.

Iirc he gets the ring in 3001 and the whole thing ends in 3019, however, it is mostly because he was just hanging out amd the whole thing didn’t start until 3018:
