Came into this thread to try to figure out how gas stations disappearing in China had a serious effect on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but it turns out that acronyms just short circuit my brain.

I don’t understand, even if a bunch close, it just means that now there’s only one station within a mile of your house rather than four. Maybe this creates some irritation for ICE car drivers but I can’t imagine there’s any real anxiety.

I mean, it seems like a sicko laughing moment but this is actually an indicator of conditions that are gonna be bad in the near term and could hurt americans and others.
Gasoline production isnt going down as fast as fueling stations are going away. Gasoline comes from the refinement of crude oil and if the crude isn’t being left alone then gas is still being produced.
If i have a hundred barrels of crude oil, i can’t really choose to make more or less gas, diesel, naptha or bunker oil. You get out what is in the crude through distillation and cracking. The ratio produced doesn’t really change.
So who ends up winning out when gas is cheap but small gas stations can’t make ends meet? Of course giant gas stations like the bucees and sheetz of the us benefit, but consumers of gas who can maintain their own infrastructure and make sure they don’t get left by the side of the road also find a niche to occupy.
In a world where there’s a cheap glut of gasoline, there’s incentive for production of massive gas engines like the (cool, based, neat) chevy 8100 that get near gallons per mile but produce the massive torque required for md and hd applications.
So expect gas engine technology of our near future to split between the “stop at every stoplight, burn up the engine, who cares if it saves .15 cents per fill up” and “you’ve seen big block, but have you seen biggest block?” dichotomy and leave nothing for honest hardworking Americans who just want a boxer four cylinder, 4l i6 or a smolblocchevy.
Who cares about the American motorist though? Well, gas is not as energy dense and more readily combusts compared to diesel so it’s easier and cheaper to make engines that can use it, but harder to reach high torque output without sacrificing efficiency. But the very industries that can take advantage of cheap gas prices will be incentivized to inefficiently burn gasoline instead of diesel to move rocks around or run heavy equipment or what have you.
The same amount of gas gets produced, the same amount of gas gets burned, but less work is done.
