    I think it depends on which part of Texas. It’s a big ass state, and thus the western chunk is more The Southwest, i.e. like Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, whereas east Texas is part of The South.

      Texas was settled as an extension of the Deep South. This still can be seen on population density maps, where the third of the state lumped up towards the eastern border has almost all the population, and all of the populated countryside.

      Sure, Dallas became the plains ranching hub, and Austin and San Antonio are more Western, but the western half of the state is almost totally empty.
