  • The swastika was swapped out before Russia invaded Ukraine, before Russia tried to claim the “denazifying” shit, so you’re barking up the wrong tree.

And I am defending them because it was perfectly adequate snark to point out the hypocrisy of “yeah it’s okay, he’s Finn after all” when it comes to ugly xenophobia, when Finns themselves have a shitty track record. They did actually literally ally with Nazis, and if we now want to talk about “historical context” then it’s fair game to look into shit like refusing to drop what is now a nazi symbol by the official organ of the state, for decades.

Or we could stop running defense for any shitty actions somebody from “our side” does towards anybody else, and do some actual self-crit every once in a while. I’ve had Russian friends literally get attacked for simply being Russian (and no, not supportive of the invasion) after 2022, so I am not going to shut up when people give xenophobes a free pass, but push back super hard against what is a mild burn at best.

  • You are free to reclaim the symbols, make an account Cethin88 (it’s a birth year!) with a marble statue profile pic, then complain about how it’s Nazis’ fault you’re being misunderstood.

And there is also quite a difference between taking a work from x hundreds of years ago that might incorporate some symbol (like Ancient Roman fasces or swastikas in Eastern Slavic pagan art), and being a modern state that refuses to drop the MAIN nazi symbol. And just so we are clear, the Finnish Air Force did eventually drop the symbol a few years back, I guess it must have been because of woke. Or maybe they actually realized it doesn’t look great what with the fascist revival in the entirety of Europe, but many people have had a problem with that for a long time before that already, especially since so many Finns are PROUD of their nazi collaboration history.

  • Kind of a silly one, but for me it was some reddit meme thread. It was a joke about arch linux, and a person jokes “if somebody uses arch and is vegan, which will they say first?” and then somebody mentioned that “I’m vegan btw” is a common joke on r/vegancirclejerk. I went to that subreddit and started reading, it was hilarious, but I also felt my cognitive dissonance grow with every post. Took me like a week or two and I decided that I am a fucking hypocrite and need to make a change, because what I am participating in is seriously wrong and I can’t continue like this.

I asked my partner if she would be cool if we tried out veganism, and turns out she has also been thinking about it lately, due to a vegan coworker that inspired her. So we then went vegan at the same time and it’s been almost 4 years of that now.

Also similarly to hamid, all the vegan marketing felt super off to us which made us do the additional plunge into WFPB with none of the weird substitutes.

  • The “minor prizes” like the one I got were checks to be cashed in, the perfect score girl prize was more like a grant though.

And yeah I too was surprised and while I was happy at the time (which kid wouldn’t, right), it does feel weird now lol. My guess is that they fucked up their budget for the year and needed to burn the money for tax reasons?

  • For my graduation (non-American country btw), the top like 30 students in school got awards. I was at place 21 or 22 and got like the equivalent of $100. The girl who got #1 (and she had like perfect grades all around, with a shitload of extracurriculars etc) won some fancy language trip across Europe or some shit, said to be worth like $4000.

Prior to the graduation ceremony I had no idea they were even giving out prizes lol, best I ever got before that was a book

  • I live in a country where strip clubs don’t really exist (I mean I’ve heard of like one existing, that’s it) but when I was 18 or 19 a bar I frequented had an events night where they hired two strippers: a girl and a guy. I went out of curiosity and honestly I felt weird afterwards, standing in a crowd of horny men looking at a woman undressing, and everybody also theatrically showing disgust at the male stripper because “that’s gay”. Weird shit.

I have however been to burlesque and that’s a cool show, horny but also artsy and fun.
