Faced with a dwindling number of experienced intelligence agents on the ground, with many expelled after the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia is now resorting to low-level operatives recruited through Telegram or similar social networks to conduct dozens of attempted or successful attacks in Europe, according to court records and security sources. These “disposable agents” have carried out cyberattacks but also riskier actions that included massive fires, incendiary devices destined for cargo planes, vandalism, and influence campaigns targeting the heart of Europe’s democracies- its voters.

No military spending is fine as long as all parties play by the rule of law and accept universal human rights. This is not the case. Yanis is addressing the wrong party here.
I guess this answers your question.

Maybe Yanis could also get an invitation to live in Oleksandr Usyk’s house for a while?. Just to see whether he changes his mind.
Btw, this ‘military Keynesiasm’ - the economic policy stating that war and military spending is the basis for economic growth - is something that has been propagated and implemented by Russia, including by the economist Andrey Belousov, Russia’s current defence minister. Is Russia’s budget well-balanced according to Yanis?

The HDE Consumer Barometer for June 2025 noted that while ‘optimism is growing among consumers’, a more consistent improvement in consumer sentiment will be necessary to drive a noticeable recovery in consumption […]
Consumers’ propensity to buy is on the increase, the HDE noted, continuing a trend of recent months, however this is echoed by intentions to intensify their savings efforts, a lingering effect of the overall economic environment […]

In the U.S. the unemployment rate is still relatively low, similarly to Europe: In April 2025, the euro area seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.2%, down from 6.3% in March 2025 and from 6.4% in April 2024. The EU unemployment rate was 5.9% in April 2025, stable compared with March 2025 and down from 6.0% in April 2024.
In the world’s second largest economy the situation is grim supposedly to due Trump’s tariff conundrum and a low private domestic consumption: job losses in China’s manufacturing sector signal deepening economic strain and ineffective stimulus efforts as the country’s Caixin Manufacturing PMI dropped to 48.3 in May, the lowest since Q3 2022, signaling shrinking output.

Defence or Welfare? Europe Can Afford Both, and Must
Framing welfare against defence is a politically damaging proposition. It is easy to see how this could be exploited by anti-EU populists and Europe’s adversaries. President Putin, undoubtedly, would welcome such a division. But the entire narrative that Europe faces a supposedly unavoidable choice between protecting its social model and bolstering its defences is not only politically unfortunate; it is empirically unfounded […]
Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.orgto Europe@feddit.org•France’s defence spending surge threatened by high national debtEnglish81·6 days agoThis is on topic:
Russian defense spending eclipsed all other European countries combined in 2024 and is projected to increase further in 2025, according to a report published by UK’s International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in February 2025.
The IISS found that Moscow’s military expenditure spiked by over 40 percent to almost $146 billion [in 2024], equivalent to 6.7 percent GDP, and is on track to hit 7.5 percent GDP in 2025. When adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), Russia spent nearly $462 billion in 2024, effectively leapfrogging Europe’s collective spending. PPP is a tool used to remove price level differences between currencies in order to better demonstrate the purchasing strength of one over another.
IISS’ estimates are in line with Russia’s official budget numbers for 2024. According to the Kremlin’s plans released back in last fall, defence spending will account for 32% of the total 2025 budget expenditure.
So it seems France and the others will have to find a way to manage this.
