Oh wow! That’s amazing.
Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s…. Oh wait. Some people actually do. I guess I should put something worth reading in here then. Err… Let’s go with lorem impsum for the time being.

Groundhog (Gr), a unit of uncertainty in weather predictions. The value of 1 Gr means the prediction is as good as pulling it out of a hat.
You gotta have some standards. If you use a different rodent every year, you can’t realistically compare the results with one another. Who knows how wildly the measurement error varies from species to species?
Yeah, the fediverse-observer has plenty graphs. It just took me a while to end up in the software specific graphs. I started with “stats” (at the top) instead of the software list which also has a graph for each. Stats gives you a broad overview of everything, whereas the software list gives the details I was looking for.
Lemmy appears to be declining, stabilizing or something. Meanwhile, Piefed is about an order of magnitude smaller, but growing.

2·7 days agoYou could just buy one of those workstations that are actually almost servers. Some of them have 2 CPUs, 8 slots for RAM and a PCIe slot for your GPU. Those motherboards can handle ECC.
Just made a new account on piefed, and I really can’t wait to get started. Once it gets approved, I’m definitely going to be spending more time there.
In order to balance the flow of popular communities and more quiet ones, you really need “multireddits”. Since Lemmy doesn’t have that feature, I’ve made multiple accounts to manage things, which definitely contributes to the perceived MAU. If Piefed helps with that, I guess I’ll just abandon some of my Lemmy accounts in response. Now that more and more people are becoming aware of Piefed, I expect that Lemmy numbers might take a hit at some point.
Anyway, I would really like to see how different platforms have evolved over time. For example, is Piefed growing more or faster than Lemmy. Visualizations really help with that.
As far as I know, Mastodon was specifically designed to be less addictive than xitter. Maybe Pixelfed was designed that way as well.
That’s a lot of numbers. Maybe a bit too much for me, so I went to the fediverse observer to see the data in graphical form.
Looks like all lines are going up at the moment, and some started in 2025-12. Did that many people make a new year’s resolution to ditch Big Social?

4·7 days agoI’ll take this opportunity to promote my factorial community (!unexpectedfactorial@sopuli.xyz.
Around new year, I there was plenty of 2026! floating around, but I didn’t think that was really worth posting. I’ll keep my eyes open for interesting factorials in the future though.
Can confirm. There are lots of “boring” videos on Loops. Like, check this out. Yes, it’s an entire channel dedicated to chickens. I mean, it’s nice and relaxing, but nowhere near as addicting and engaging as tiktok or instagram videos. I’ll still count that as a win.
Regardless, @billinkc still rocks.
Before the app was released, I noticed that suddenly there were many new users. Previously, making an account wasn’t open to everyone, but apparently that has changed too.

5·9 days agoNo shortage of trash, but that’s true for all platforms.
I just used the customize button on the top right corner and moved politics and a bunch of other junk to the “hide” column. This way, the home feed has a chance of containing things worth watching. Mostly though, I just use Odysee for watching the few channels I care about. Incidentally, I arranged the “followed” section to the top of the list.
As a result, I don’t see any conspiracy or MAGA nonsense at all.

17·9 days agoPeertube for long tech videos. You’ll find lots of linux people here. Sure, there’s pretty much everything else too, but that’s what I use Peertube for.
Odysee for a wide range of videos in general. Many youtubers have backed up their videos here.
Loops for short videos… more like a tiktok clone really.
It’s the trivial proof.

This is the primary reason why I prefer to use Linux. With most FOSS projects, it’s clear that the user is respected, and that’s the way it should be.

No worries. It’s ok.
When clicking that link, I was just greeted with a list of numbers, so my eyes started wandering elsewhere. That’s why I ended up looking at the stats, and totally missed the obvious graph buttons in the software list. My bad…
About those fluctuations: I think some people will try a little bit of instance hopping before settling on just one place. Let’s say you start with the biggest one, then realize you want something else, end up using a slow instance, and finally discover the right one. If enough many people do this, it’s going to cause some visible oscillations in the data.
