There’s an asterisk but no explanation on what it’s for?

    /–edit–/

Here’s from their post on Reddit:

    Bonus info!

Here are some more facts about swell sharks:

When threatened, swell sharks can inflate their bodies by swallowing water or air, increasing their size to deter predators. This swelling can make them difficult to extract from crevices and may intimidate potential threats. After inflating with air, they can release it with a sound resembling a dog-like bark.

Swell sharks are nocturnal, hiding in rocky crevices during the day and emerging at night to hunt. They employ ambush tactics, either sucking prey into their mouths or lying in wait with open jaws to capture unsuspecting fish and invertebrates.

Swell sharks lay flattened egg cases, often referred to as “mermaid’s purses,” which they attach to underwater structures. In January 2025, a swell shark pup named “Yoko” was born at the Shreveport Aquarium in Louisiana, despite no male sharks being present for over three years. This event suggests the possibility of parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction) or delayed fertilization.

Under blue light, swell sharks exhibit biofluorescence, emitting a green glow. This trait may aid in communication and camouflage.

Typically reaching lengths of about 90 cm (35 inches), they have a stout body with a broad head and distinctive brown and white spots.

Swell sharks inhabit the eastern Pacific Ocean, from central California to southern Mexico, and are also found off the coast of Chile. They prefer depths between 5 and 457 meters, often residing in kelp forests and rocky reefs.

Ha! I didn’t realize I posted the version with the asterisk. Originally I had a disclaimer there that swell sharks inflate with water and not air, but then someone on our Patreon pointed out that they’re actually able to inflate in both ways, so I edited it out. Apparently the version that Google Photos had backed up was the unedited version though.
