Huuuge deep dive on the show and awesome nostalgia fest for lovers of this (probably underrated) show!
It was great starting out but I feel it jumped the shark in a way that made it just, bland and meh. It worked when it initially was a bit more Sci than Fi, but later it upped the drama aspects and went all in on Fi with some handwavy Sci mumbo and it just lost me.
Yea, been a while since I’ve seen it, but I feel like it’s pretty obvious that the core of the shows value is that opening 1.5-2 seasons where you learn about these characters and the world that made them.
Hard disagree. The first season was just awful.
Every fucking episode:
(Something weird happens)
“Walter! Could this be related to your research?”
(Walter acts twitchy)
“WE HAVE TO GET THIS BACK TO MY LAB!!!”
(More weirdness)
Walter: “This is just like when x in the y in 19-dickety.”
“Oh Walter! You so crazy!”
(Walter was right)
(Alien eating hot sauce)I’m with you, I’m a big nerd but rarely bounced so hard off a sci-fi show as I bounced off Fringe.
Why the but? Maybe you being a big nerd is the reason you didn’t like Fringe (because it wasn’t nerdy enough). At least that’s how I usually see if I don’t like something
Yea, it was about the characters not the sci fi. The appeal for those who like the show was watching Walter be Walter and piecing together where he was coming from and what
partpast was behind his behaviours. Not for every one. But the bit you disliked is I think the quirky charm that attracts others.
I really didn’t like how they disrespected Walter most of the time. If you weren’t interested in his opinions, why do you ask him?
It just got super tiresome super quickly. I never finished the first season.
It gets much better starting in Season 2. I had the same experience as you during season 1 and just watched episodes I caught randomly. Season 2+ had me watching everything.
Totally agree. When I rewatch the show I often cherrypick a few episodes from the first season and go into Season 2.
Yeah, I think the show had some fun ideas, but Walter ruined it for me. His absent minded scientist routine was really stale and forced.
Besides that they made no attempt to make the science somewhat believable. The man might as well just be a wizard.
s/Alien/Man from the future/, but otherwise on point.
Enjoyed fringe a lot for what it was. Good cast - John noble was great. Enjoyed all the seasons. Masterpiece though? No.
Mmmm … I’m rather open to the argument of the video which is that for its time it probably did very well at the things we’ve come to value about TV more and more over time. You know, compare it to something like Marvel and Star Wars, which feel like they’re dominating the sci fi tv space at the moment. The amount of grey-ness the characters have while also being portrayed sympathetically and even endearingly without shying away from what they are … it worked for me when I watched it and I wouldn’t be surprised if it has aged rather well.
Marvel is lazy. The Orci/Kurzmann/Abrams brainchildren are clumsy.
I’ll never forget Walter Bishop. He’s the best mad scientist ever written.
The first 2 seasons were fun and interesting. But they lost me after that.
Just like everything Abrams, Kurtzmen, and Orci touch. It’s all flash and poor writing, with no satisfying ending
Just like everything Abrams, Kurtzmen [sic] , and Orci touch.
So true. They managed to destroy a show like Sleepy Hollow, with a glorious premise and excellent casting, to the point that the main actress bailed out.
Fringe is awesome, my professor told me to watch it early this year.
Geee thanks, ANOTHER awesome show I need to re-watched.
I watched this whole thing yesterday and this morning (my time) when it dropped, didn’t do the challenges though. This is 3 hours long though, but it breaks down the show quite well.
Where I am from Fringe was always popular, at least when I was still at uni.
I rewatch the show every few years or so. It is still one of my favourites
I’ve rewatched this series a few times and I love it! Walter is by far my favorite.
the last couple seasons were a slog… the show lacked cohesion
“Forgotten masterpiece,” says the amnesia victim. Nostalgiafest?? It’s only from.2008-2013!
Wait til you hear about a series of movies about a guy who discovers nothing is real and in reality humans are battling against a giant sentient computer that uses people like batteries! It’s from —GASP!— PREHISTORIC 1999-2003!!
No need for the sass.
Some people are younger than you and you might be kinda old now … not a problem, but get used to it, we have different perspectives.
A 10 year old in 2008 is 25 now and may well have children of their own. That’s a completely transformed person since the show aired. That counts as nostalgia. Not for you, that’s fine. But chill and let people enjoy themselves.
Otherwise, I am actually old enough to understand where you’re coming from (I might sctuslly be older than you, not that it matters), except that reminiscing about something from 10 years ago counts as nostalgia for me especially if it’s a deep dive detailed retelling as this … I was surprised at how much of the show I’d forgotten.
If want to get nostalgic about the matrix, or Jurassic Park, or Aliens or Star Wars or whatever … go ahead. Doesn’t mean we can’t get nostalgic about something we remember endearingly.
Yes need for sass. SASS!! You ARE showing your age!
Nostalgia for a TV series that is most likely available for viewing AT THIS VERY MOMENT? That’s like saying you’re feeling nostalgic about The Big Bang Theory! It NEVER went away!
Maybe you mean nostalgia for the first encounter, like your first kiss? “I remember when I first saw Fringe…and now I’m seeing it on Netflix for the seventh complete run-through of all the seasons.” “Oh, ham and American cheese sandwich, I remember the first time Mom made you for me in 1st grade…”
How do you get through your day, all misty-eyed like that? Now THAT’S SASS!
I am overwhelmed by wit. I clearly lack the intelligence to comprehend the literary genius. I will need time and wisdom to heal from this.
FRINGE! Not CRINGE, FRINGE! Bad luck to post FRINGE!
This is a show I’ve tried to get into multiple time, but I made it a couple episodes and lost interest. I’m a big sci-fi fan (all kinds), but for some reason I didn’t click with it. I hear people talk about loving it though, and it’s always sitting on my recommended list based on shows I watch. Maybe someday I’ll get through the first season.
The disrespect to Jasika Nicole has soured the show for me, and I liked it quite a bit the first time.
Forgotten? I hear about it every other day, people don’t stfu about it
I’m sorry but after reading Daniel Greens book I have not watched any of his content since. He’s such a hypocrite. Things he complained about in book reviews were all over his book.
Anna Torv is attractive and charismatic, but finding out that Rupert Murdoch is her uncle just ruined it for me.
According to her Wikipedia, through her estranged father. You can’t pick your relatives and you’re not the same as them. Seems a superficial reason to dislike an actor.

Rupert Murdoch is not a character in the show. He’s the ex chairman of Fox.
