On this day in 1953, the U.S. and British governments initiated a coup d’état against the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh had been preparing to nationalize Iran’s British-owned oil fields.

Mosaddegh had sought to audit the documents of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), later re-named British Petroleum, and to limit the company’s control over Iranian oil reserves. When the AIOC refused to cooperate with the Iranian government, the parliament voted to nationalize Iran’s oil industry and to expel foreign corporate representatives from the country.

In response, the British began a worldwide boycott of Iranian oil to pressure Iran economically and engaged in subterfuge to undermine Mosaddegh’s government.

Judging Mosaddegh to be unreliable and fearing a communist takeover, Winston Churchill and the Eisenhower administration overthrew Iran’s government. The coup action was also supported by the Iranian clergy, who opposed Mosaddegh’s secularism.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hired mobsters to stage pro-Shah riots and paid people to travel to Tehran and take over the streets of the city. Between 200 and 300 people were killed in the ensuing mayhem.

Mosaddegh was arrested, tried, and convicted of treason by the Shah’s military court. Many of his supporters were imprisoned, several received the death penalty. Mosaddegh himself lived the rest of his life under house arrest, dying in 1967.

After the coup, the Shah ruled as a monarch for the next 26 years until he was overthrown in the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

I talked to a lawyer about suing the guy who made me homeless and abused my pets. They said that it would be foolish paying something like 15k to litigate a case in civil court that could at best get like 25k so I should just take the 10k cap at small claims. Then he offered a flat fee of 2.5k to do all the prep work for me. At the same time that seems like a really good idea because I’m dealing with a verbal contract, but it seems like a crazy amount of money. He’s asking for a quarter of the max judgement. Wah I need an adult.

You should be able to find someone with a lower fee. It can be helpful to have someone to help you get your evidence together and to serve the person with papers, but that should be less than $1k. Is the person you talked to a tenant’s rights lawyer?

The person I talked to was a litigation lawyer that was on a list I compiled from a referral site like 10 months ago when this all first happened to me and I only had anti-money.

It might help to check if there are tenants rights organizations where you live; if the person doing this to you was a landlord, a tenants rights organization might be able to refer you to someone to help with small claims. Lawyers (even tenants rights lawyers) always need the damages to be more than $30k or it isn’t worth it to them. Small claims should be open and shut if you’re organized with evidence and prepared.

i feel like if I were a lawyer and i were confident about the prospects of the case I would feel comfortable being paid contingent on success, out of the winnings from the case, but idk, I guess I’m not a lawyer. Hopefully you get what you can
