I don’t really think he knows this site’s culture at all. No one is dissuading people from reading theory lol

Roderic Day, he does some good work, but is also very extremely combative, and alienates a lot of people who he should be building ties with.

The all should be subject to ruthless critique thing has limits, and we shouldn’t be picking pointless fights with ppl we agree on 99% of things with.

Twitter is partly to blame because it destroys people’s brains, but all communists would do well to read Liu Shaoqi - how to be a good communist.

in selected works of Zhoul Enlai vol 1 (reading atm) so far I’d recommend: On eliminating non-prole ideology from the party pg 20, Directive from the central committee pg 41 since it goes over a bit of history, oppose seeking peace through compromise on 96, guidelines for myself on 144, how to be a good leader on 146, Chinese fascism and new autocracy on 160, esp reading that one atm and esp after finishing Sohn-Rethel’s book there’s a lot of interesting parallels between KMT and JP and Germany at the time especially in ag and arms industry. I’m sure there’s a lot more interesting pieces in here.

I know who he is ha I was just making fun of him. But thank you for the real reply and apologies that my joke was so unclear that I wasted your time. I bet others learned from and appreciated it, though!

We absolutely must challenge each other as much as possible https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_03.htm “To let things slide for the sake of peace and friendship when a person has clearly gone wrong, and refrain from principled argument because he is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a schoolmate, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague or old subordinate. Or to touch on the matter lightly instead of going into it thoroughly, so as to keep on good terms. The result is that both the organization and the individual are harmed. This is one type of liberalism”. As Marxists we must push ourselves and each to come to a better understanding of the current conditions of our time through dialectical materialism and rigorous criticism of our suppositions lest we be make mistakes that can be avoided. This is why studying is important it always us to argue and together come to the correct conclusion that we then act upon.

Edit: Fixed my English a bit

There’s a difference between criticism aimed at refining ideas and intended to help comrades, and criticism (regardless of whether it’s shallow or well-thought-out) meant to alienate and divide.

Mao was clearly referring to the former here.

This is another Mao quote worth reading:

Those with a “Left” deviation in their thinking magnify contradictions between ourselves and the enemy to such an extent that they take certain contradictions among the people for contradictions with the enemy and regard as counter-revolutionaries persons who are actually not.

I disagree that Roderic here is trying to alienate and dived. I see criticism that must be taken into account discussion of discipline among communists and what is to be done is not Left deviation-ism. In the first tweet Roderic is referring to the fact that the building of the vanguard party should be the objective of the communists and that the discussion’s around other method’s should be subordinated to that goal. Although his American comment is perhaps uncharitable I can see that. The second tweet is more controversial I suppose Roderic expected more of a higher standard of discussion out of this forum then he observed (since it is dominated by communists) As this forum is not explicitly a Marxists theory board I do not share in his disappointment as much.

            Nailed it.

He just didn’t do much if any research on the history of this place…not that this site is worthy of that anyhow.

Not everyone here is ML and thus we really shouldn’t have an expectation to be any sort of vanguard of democratic centralism as a rev-left unity shitposting forum.

I’d like for our site to move in the direction of his expectations, but our current posture is also good for onboarding anarchists towards ML tendencies. Maybe some coordination discussions should happen between our admins, those of Lemmygrad and .ml, and the Lemmy devs to build a more coherent pipeline strategy, but again, that’s probably assigning too much significance to a collection of shitposting boards.
