I assume “banana republic” doesn’t refer to countries historically coupd and controlled by an american fruit company here, and just something racist.

You can trace this back to the Guatemala Coup of '54. But I think the double-speak really took off after Bush invaded Panama to get his old friend Noriega. “Banana Republic” stopped being “Latin American country ruled by United Fruit Company gestapo” and started meaning “Latin American country ruled by military dictatorship”, with “communism” and “dictatorship” converging to mean the same thing.

With Venezuelans moving in to extract O&G resources from around Guyana and Milei doing clown shit in Argentina, I’m sure you’re going to see a new round of “South American Government Doing A Banana Republic” news stories cropping up in the press that OP’s guy will gobble up. Haiti’s been getting a lot of that treatment recently, too, thanks to the “deteriorating” state of their “democracy”.

In either case, there’s a strong BlueAnon vibe to the insistence among liberals that Biden is secretly doing great and simply getting shafted by the Evil Media. This feels like it fell directly out of the 90s/00s era Republican playbook. Shouldn’t be surprising since it seems like Biden’s staffed his PR team with a bunch of Bill Kristol era hacks.

I ask every single poster who says shit like this to list some systemic improvements that Biden made as a direct result of him “getting shit done” and they never do. They just disappear. It’s almost like they don’t know what shit he’s got done. Probably because he hasn’t got shit done at all.

  • maybe they are referring to Build Back Better, which is when Biden declared COVID over and halted systematic testing/reporting, ended relief spending programs, unpaused student loans in exchange for a bill approving infrastructure spending that was cut in half immediately and ultimately tanked anyway by Joe “Mansion” Manchin.

i remember when all that was going down, some pretty light analysis of the BBB negotiations was that Joe’s team gave away everything to the republicans and the only thing the republicans seemed to allow was the student $10k-$20k student loan write off, making it so a lot of Joe’s political capital was riding on that initiative. i knew right then the reactionary court would kill it.

of course, when it was killed, Team Joe insisted they would have something else for us in its place. if the adjustment repayment plan is what they were referring to, it’s a joke.

these blue maga freaks are goldfish.

Also, even in the initial form the infrastructure bill was more “regular upkeep and expansion” than WPA 2.0. No one is going to get fired up by “we did the bare minimum of a functional state!”

The only half decent thing he did was the child tax credit expansion, which he then promptly killed. And even that, his dipshit supporters drastically overstate like claiming it virtually eliminated child poverty (it only cut it by half and I do question their measurements especially of homeless youth).

All it did was exist just long enough to prove that we could help people if we wanted to, and then stopped helping them.

“Banana Republic.” Fucking NATO leftists are chauvinistic and racist. And they’re a self-proclaimed Anarchist. These jokes just keep writing themselves. Is there a self-proclaimed Trotskyist in there too?

I how when you ask these people what things specifically he has done, they give very vague generalities like “The economy is doing great!”

They just think that if they repeat “He’s a great president” often enough, it’ll become true.
