“gee Ms. A Bad Idea, how did you get so smart at languages, I keep trying but it never sticks”
The trick to actually really for real learning a language when you’re not immersed in it as the living language of your everyday life is to WRITE IT DOWN
ON PAPER. WITH YOUR HANDS
USE A BETTER PEN, THOSE CHEAP BALLPOINTS WILL INJURE YOU
JUST COPY A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE IF THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE, IT WILL HELP
Thanks for the reminder. The apps are so convenient but I can see that my results are poorer. I’ll get writing.
You’re welcome. Did you know we actually learn faster and better when writing by hand?
I did, yes. But I thought that the increased frequency of gamified apps specifically would give me more opportunities during times where writing is difficult (eg when travelling). But in hindsight, it was a mistake to replace writing completely.
Yeah I totally understand what you mean. Like, you can just open the app and do a few tasks, and put your phone in your pocket, done!
With pen and paper, you need to get your notebook, pen, maybe studybook, open the right page, write (which takes more time) and then put them all away.
Exactly. I can’t really do the paper-based option while commuting. But when at home I’d actually prefer to get away from my devices, so that’s what I’ll do.
I might include song lyrics to keep it varied. Thanks again for the motivation / reminder.
I do a mix. I like to use digital for learning vocabulary, mostly because of the convenience. But if I do an exercise, write a text or do listening comprehension, I prefer pen all the way.
Same when I struggle with the spelling of a word. Repetition by hand writing helps me way more than digital.I totally notice a difference between writing by hand or with a keyboard. In one way it’s because of the muscle memory. Knowing how to type a word, does not mean I know how to write it. Even if I use digital options (Like websites/communities where you can post text and native speaker then correct it), I prefer to draft it by hand. (It is also more fun. Crossing out a misspelled word is just way more satisfying than just deleting it :D)
Doing a mix is probably best, yes. It’s been a long time since I learned a new language, but from what I remember, learning vocabulary is more about drilling new words and meanings, while the other exercises are more about understanding.
Just the fact that it takes more time to write by hand helps the learning process :)
