World News@lemmy.ml•Third China Shock exposing US's broken defense economics
6·13 hours agoAdditionally, it’s worth noting that public sector controls the commanding heights of the economy in China. While these are not run as cooperatives, the purpose of work is the key difference. The goal of a private corporation is to produce capital for the owners. Meanwhile, public enterprise exists to produce things the society needs. The workers in public enterprises are the primary beneficiaries of their labor. Additionally, the state owns the golden share in all major corporations, and thus makes final decisions on how they operate. So, even private sector in China exists on a tight leash. I can highly recommend this video from Ben Norton explaining how Chinese economy actually works for people who are interested.

Socialism@lemmy.ml•Xi's article on promoting reading to be published
8·22 hours agoOh here’s the whole thing, and I feel the same. Every time I’ve had to change a job, I ended up learning a bunch of new things in the process, and it really does stimulate the mind. It’s so easy to get into a routine when you do the same thing over and over, and your mind starts to dull.
BEIJING, April 15 – An article by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on promoting nationwide reading and building a book-loving society will be published on Thursday.
The article by Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will be published in this year’s eighth issue of the Qiushi Journal, a flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee.
The article is an excerpt of Xi’s discourses from March 2013 to March 2025.
Reading can spark intellectual insight, instill lofty ideals, and nurture a sense of moral integrity, according to the article.
Communists should cultivate the habit of reading Marxist classics and understanding their principles as part of their daily lives, the article says.
Officials should study according to the needs of their work, the article says.
The article says people should read widely and choose good books, drawing wisdom and nourishment from them. It adds that work pressures should not be used as an excuse to neglect learning, nor should learning be reduced to a mere formality just for show.
Digital reading should be combined with traditional reading, the article adds.
The article points out that it is necessary to build a learning society where all people engage in lifelong learning, adding that Party members and officials should take the lead in reading and learning.

Science@lemmy.ml•How climate change led to demise of an advanced Chinese civilisation 4,500 years ago
5·1 day agoIndeed, we’re gonna be facing much bigger problems. And on top of that, our whole global economy is built entirely on just in time supply chains. Any time there’s a breakdown in shipping then the whole house of cards quickly comes crashing down. And most of the world has no local redundancies that would facilitate any measure of self sufficiency.

The deserts have been expanding for a long time and absorbing arable land. They’re not greening the entire desert obviously. They’re reclaiming the land and creating a green wall so the desert doesn’t spread.
