It was more that the character was a main character and was sexualised, in 3D.

5·2 days agoHow would you propose finding more drugs for pregnant women? Because generally double blind clinical trials is the best way. Experimenting on pregnant women is considered unethical, which is part of the problem.
Yes, it would be great if we knew more but the fact of the matter is that there is neither the commercial impetus to study more, more the ethical ease of consent from a foetus.
Most data on safety comes from drugs already in use and ‘presumed’ safe due to their long standing use. Newer drugs are avoided but when taken without realizing they are pregnant or if there is no later active and studying the outcome is the only available options. That doesn’t give much data.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a TV series that you really, really liked and would enthusiastically recommend?
9·4 days agoI haven’t seen the west wing mentioned. It’s great drama with character arcs thatead to growth, which was unusual for episodic tv at the time. It chronicles the fictional presidents white house team dealing with politics and running the country, with ideals, pragmatism when ideals can’t work and holds politicians to a standard that we’d all benefit from.
The IT crowd has already been mentioned. It is laugh out loud funny, but being British, the absurdist humour can take a bit of getting used to. It’s not meant to depict realism, but charicatures. Don’t be afraid to pirate it as the lead writer is a massive dickhead.
Chernobyl is amazing, as others have said. Really tender exploration for the people that would have been involved at all levels. It’s harrowing at parts, inspiring at others. It makes us all seem human rather than a world of countries.
Buffy is peak for me with the knster of the week, overarching main baddie for a season and the funny quips mixed in. Others prefer angel or xfiles or fringe. However if any of the above tickle your fancy, you should try the others. Then try firefly and the movie.
I haven’t seen much reality TV here. You should check out the UK version of the traitors. It’s amazing TV. Like other reality TV, as the seasons go on, the participants have more of an idea of the course of the show and how they’ll be perceived. In ye first, they are a blank slate and you can see that the stress of deception is getting to them in a real way and the paranoia affects all.
The wire is a great cops and robbers show that bluts the lines between good guys and bad guys. All are just people doing what they can to make their way. Some that’s with crime, some that’s with stopping crime. All have dark sides and a human side.

1·4 days agoThe margins in grocery are razor thin. It’s a volume game…usually they have your cash before they need to pay the supplier with 30 days payment pretty standard in business.
I’m not saying they won’t do all you’re suggesting. I’m saying they’ll do both. Unless we prevent them with regulations and fines.

Technology@lemmy.world•Dynamic pricing could be coming to your local supermarketEnglish
2·5 days agoSome countries require pricing to be visible. I would assume, just like online, they will use algorithms and ai to figure out what price point gives the most profit. Its only trouble to set up. The corporate world doesn’t look at trouble. They look at cost. If the return investment is positive, they do it. If it’s high, they do it as a priority.
Not all retail is online. Much is but not all. Groceries is one that is often better in person for that evenings meal on the way home from work. It’s led to the rise of metro style supermarkets near transport hubs.

2·5 days agoI a shop with 10 products, yes, I’d agree. In a supermarket with thousands of products, they can predict what you’re likely to buy if you’re a regular customer and you might be the only one buying those items that day.
I don’t expect them to do it overnight. First they roll them out for the cost savings. Just like they did with barcodes rather than price labels. Then they start to look at other savings or profit centres.
After a while it becomes, why wouldn’t they do it?

8·5 days agoThey don’t currently, but they could.
Take brand x on the shelf. Sold for $5 at a profit of $1. They sell 10 per week. You buy 2 if those every week, on Wednesday at about 6pm. Why not make them $5.50 next Wednesday and see what happens. Normal price on other days as no pattern identified.
Then once that’s successful, why not have beacons detecting your phone, or even the stores app feeding your location. Then they can update just for the hours you are there.
Oh, but you’ll say you swore it said $5 when you picked it off the shelf. The worker will say they have to charge what’s there now and what it scanned as. Your choice to purchase it or go look for something else.
They’ve already started all this crap with online purchasing. It’s just moving it to retail.

World News@lemmy.world•Donald Trump cuts all US trade with Spain over Iran war disputeEnglish
14·5 days agoYes, it protects the smaller countries as much as the big ones. Any trade retaliation, like cutting off Spain means all members would cut off USA.
All he’s doing is creating more states willing to drop USA softly. Denmark was shocked awake. Now Spain. Hopefully Ireland soon. France has always been moderately awake.
The USA is not a trustworthy partner. Their interests conflict with European values and European interests more and more.
Ruasia and china are worries, but Russia less so as it’s seen to be weak but disruptive. China acts reliably but sometimes against others interests. China are less collaborative but moving to be moreso. They will do what they can to fill the void.
Add all this uncertainty with another war in the middle east and we’re in for a rough few years. It looks like Iran has been preparing for a drawn out war for quite a while. The USA has not, yet started one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some hugely important music albums?
2·5 days agoRadiohead - in rainbows
They tried to go outside the existing studio release system before the rise of streaming. It was a pay what you want release.
Nirvana - unplugged in new York
Took a backlash to overproduced music at the time and started a still going strong tradition of publishing live albums.
Air - moon safari
Took electronic music and added a soul with otherworldly sounds and production to make chill out music that could be played in a club or on the beach or in a park with friends.
Dusty Springfield - Dusty in memphis Dusty brought back music to white people. There is a long tradition of white artists taking black music and presenting it palatably to white audiences. From elvis to P!nk. however, the UK as a more melting pot society without segregation, doesn’t see it as cultural appropriation, but just another style for anyone to sing. That tradition continues with Amy winehouse and adele today.

movies@piefed.social•Is ‘Sinners’ Winning Best Picture? Michael B. Jordan’s Victory at the Actor Awards Sets the Movie Up for Oscars Glory
2·5 days agoI found the set up only ok.ninthought some of the character introductions stepped too much into cliché. The part about the merging of worlds with music didn’t really go anywhere apart from showing different music cultures through the years in the dancing montage.
Michael b Jordan wasn’t awful, but the part was no different to any horror movie lead where the hero is an antihero.
I like horror movies. I like movies with a historical southern flair. I like music. As, you say, it seemed mashed together rather than coherent and unique. I also loved scream, but I’d be shocked if it was up for an Oscar for best picture.

movies@piefed.social•Is ‘Sinners’ Winning Best Picture? Michael B. Jordan’s Victory at the Actor Awards Sets the Movie Up for Oscars Glory
7·6 days agoI found sinners disappointing. It was fun horror movie stuff done well, but I expected more given all the buzz and reviews. I felt the same about the black panther films, so maybe I’m just not a Ryan cooler, or Michael b Jordan fan. Perhaps it’s the racism subtleties I miss, as a non American. It didn’t seem subtle, though.

I presume they expect to either way. What this would be designed to do is build resentment in those countries for the bombings against the USA and the governments that align with the USA.
