I like to consider myself part of the exclusive and oh so elite club of linux users. everyone here saying that AV is not needed, because the best security is not to be stupid, is right. but is your grandma tech literate enough to not do stupid things on her computer? your teenage son?
as the linux user base grows, the platform becomes more interesting of a target. even for stupid attacks. and lets be honnest: lots of legitimate open source projects still use an install script to curl and pipe into the terminal as a suggested method to install. which is just horrible!
while an anti malware is a patch. it is the last line of defense after a stupid mistake. so it would be great to have an actual desktop AV for linux. eset used to sell one but it is long out of service.
i use clamAV. but i maintain it for the family, so it is not as simple as telling them exactly what to install and run with default configs.
anyway, for those interested: here are two videos of malware attacks against lunux in rather different fashions:

285·2 months agounpopular opinion: if your pet has cancer, is constantly sick or requires intensive medical attention - put it down.
i have had many different pets and could never understand how some owners would give pets more treatment, than regular people in poor countries could afford. almost no animal has even close to the lifespan of humans. pet owners need to get comfortable with loosing them.

16·2 months agoagain displaying, that DRM only hurts legitimate users. a pirate has never had the problem of backing up, moving or sharing his library…
Also a good option to have these “blocks” synced over multiple accounts. I did not think of uBlock Origin at all. Thanks for the Suggestion!
That would be a great feature. I highly dislike the algorithm YouTube & co serve - as it is designed like a tar pit, just to keep you scrolling.
But a Human curated list is basically like getting recommendations from a colleague.
I like the “All” feed, as it allows some new content. My Subscriptions are somewhat smallish and mostly used for focused reading. I am just used to get rid of a certain topic with maybe up to 3 blocks (I don’t think there are many communities, which distribute over more than that many instances).
You are absolutely right, trying to tell people what to post and consume online is an absolutely absurd idea. the trick is to figure out how to find your couple of topics.
My current way of getting rid of unwanted topics is for sure not ideal. But most of the time it works just fine, when browsing randomly. Maybe i will get bored at some time and actually write a script. Thanks for the hint with https://lemmyverse.net/communities ! Hopefully i will remember to post the script here (if I ever get around to it) so others could profit from it. It seems like there might be a tiny audience for that :-)
tkanks! maybe just more than what i am used to, to get rid of a topic :-)
i think they got the tomeline wrong… as far as i remember nazi germany offered simmilar deals to jews before forcefully deporting them.
lets not talk about what happened after deportation. if the us gov is so bad with history, it might give them ideas…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's going on with imgur right now?English
2·3 months agoi guess there is pixelfed. but i would compare it more to instagram. many lemmy instances allow uploading pictures directly, so you dont necessarily need a separate host.
but where i see the biggest caveat, is costs. cloud storage is not cheap and pictures are extremely large compared to text. therefore some lemmy instances only keep uploaded pics for a certain amount of time.
I dont know whether imgur is keeping pictures for ever or not… so i am not sure if it federated imgur would solve the ‘amnesia issue’ of some lemmy instances.

1·4 months agosometimes you don’t have to (or can’t) have a full plan A-Z. Sometimes you just have to start somewhere - usually with gathering ppl. euromaidan is a great example of that.
but yes, louis could have put more concrete plans in his first video. as he has them. on the other hand he probably throws many things and sees what sticks. i guess that is what you have to do, if you try to change legislation against corpos with much more everything than you.

5·4 months agowe can argue about the choice of symbol until the world ends. the symbol is just a thing people can recognise and rally around.
the first step of any movement is to gather people. then do something. so yes, changing a picture is lazy, but it is a virtual rally point. he talks about next steps in another video: https://odysee.com/@rossmanngroup:a/you-changed-your-profile-to-clippy-now:6

32·4 months agoif us lefties could only jump over the hurdle of choosing the exact flavour before doing anything. there are more than enough people on the left side of the middle to achieve real change. but we are too caught up fighting minor differences.
fasci, on the other hand, need nothing in common, except an indistinct hatred for random people. the german fascists didn’t like religion at all, but officially worked with the christian church. still they rallied behind a religious symbol and would have died holding it up…
meanwhile we are arguing if even having a symbol is worthwhile

you are mostly right. anti cheat is somewhat more effective with kernel level access. also, it is infinitely more dangerous and creepy to run on your machine.
however, if the devs can get rid of just a couple more cheaters - they will absolutely insist on the more intrusive versions. it is not their machine after all.
i see two variants on how to solve this issue:
