12·6 days agoGiant isopods. Thry’re the big, ocean dwelling version of the little segmented crustaceans you find under rotten wood who ball up for defence.
They look like the press kit for one of those Million Dollar Skank-off romance-game-shows. I assume Thursdays at 9, next day on Paramount Plus?

27·19 days agoThe ivermectin cult is fascinating. They’re not the type of crunchy that rejects modern medicine per se and uses apple cider vinegar for everything, they just bought hard into one random modern medicine as an all-purpose panacea.
Someone should remind them it’s where we put all the leftover 4G chips when we had to make room for 5G in the Covid shots.

The system will happily take a transaction for $121.765, and every so often there’s a dispute because one report ran it through round() and another through floor().

4·21 days agoIt gives me BDO vibes-- pretty, covered in elaborate systems and features, but will it actually gel into a living world, or will 95% of the player base be drawn to some single narrow meta?
I can already see the healing mechanic as rather a mess from the huge chat volume devoted to seeking it.
What’s interesting is that we sort of have a counterpoint already with The Orville’s Moclans, who have interpreted their warrior culture fixation as mandating force-transition to suppress females. This results in an interesting cameo by Dolly Parton playing her own hologram. The Klingons are at least more progressive there.
Wouldn’t somerhing like the Asus Eee-701 fit in a large povket?

Technology@lemmy.world•Major Bitcoin mining firm pivoting to AI, plans to fully abandon crypto mining by 2027 as miners convert to AI en masse — Bitfarm to leverage 341 megawatt capacity for AI following $46 million Q3 lossEnglish
11·29 days agoAren’t most miners running ASICs that are pretty much only useful for mining specific coins? I was hoping we were past the last “people are buying off-the-shelves GPUs for crypto” bubble.

askchapo@hexbear.net•Why do you think the West is censoring porn?English
18·30 days agoI wonder if some of it is on the “Retvrn to tradition” spectrum.
They won’t bring back the unionization, the 90% top tax bracket, or the single income household, but they’re happy to oblige bringing back the 1950s morals and social norms. That doesn’t cost the billionares anything.
It’s funny how the capital types forgot that porn is a fairly powerful economic innovation engine. Every key internet tech, from chat services to SSL payment processing to video to broadband availability was implicitly turbocharged by its smut potential. Even the current golden calf of AI is trying to climb on the bandwagon and hump it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you stop turning every hobby into a 'side hustle' and just enjoy learning for fun?
3·1 month agoMake something unmarketsble.
My big hobby project was software for 30-year-old computers, not a big market.
There was a rash of counterfeit nickels in the 1960s or so. They screwed up by issuing a date/design pairing that didn’t exist.

Chapotraphouse@hexbear.net•50 year mortgages the American dream now?English
14·1 month agoI’m in my 40s and took the “stay with family” questline. I will be paying on the family home until I’m 60 because the parents refinanced it, even on a 30-year term.
It’s still dramatically cheaper than other alternatives, so odds are thry’ll be burying me here. Or I flog it to a speculator and move to some low-COL place like Ho Chi Minh City.

If only it were.
I took a coach for my last holiday. It was seven hours and $85 where a flight would have been 30 minutes and $60. I was willing to begrudge it, since this has hardly been a banner year for aviation safety in the US.
The Wifi didn’t work, sort of a dealbreaker when you’re traveling through remotest desert with no signal.
The bathroom door lock didn’t work reliably, so it was rattling all the way. Somehow I got assigned a seat next to it on both legs. At least it didn’t smell much.
They left the emergency roof exit/vent popped, a dubious choice on a trip to Las Vegas with temperatures around 40C.
The return bus broke down 15km from the destination so we had to wait sweating for a replacement.
OTOH, no TSA hassle. I still wish Amtrak was an option.
