Just wanted to drop this video essay/narrated playthrough (not really a Let’s Play) about the best CRPG ever made (tied with Disco, ofc). This channel makes them for a lot of popular RPGs and obscure Fallout mods. He’s very thorough, so it’s going to spoil the entire game, but if you’ve already played it, I thought it was interesting to get someone else’s thoughts on things.

I really enjoyed that game. The UI leaves a lot to be desired as a game player in the 2020s but the story and art are top notch. If anyone is thinking of playing it, do it - max wis and to a lesser extent int and you can talk your way through all the toughest combat encounters. The combat is stupid anyway, find out what can change the nature of a man with brute wisdom.

There’s also a planescape “book” that is basically an extraction and consolidation of all the text descriptions and dialogue in the game. It is a bit awkward as a novel but it is cool because it’s literally all the text from the game.

oh nice. I really loved this game and I remember liking a video by this guy about jagged alliance 2. It’ll be interesting to see if the games holds up based on this video.

I tried the game and got stuck/confused pretty quickly. Are there any QoL mods to make the game more tolerable to the modern gamer?

Can’t help you out regarding any mod recommendations but thought it’d be worth to support your position. In the end, videogames are meant to be fun. The way you’re supposed to play it is the way you enjoy it. It’s naturally always worth hearing other people’s perspectives and see if maybe they have merit for you, but it’s not cool to tell other people they’re wrong for how they enjoy their entertainment.

What part is causing you trouble? There are some changes in the Enhanced Edition as far as running better on modern hardware and things like that. There may be mods in the workshop on Steam or Nexus. I played the original version. Its one of my favorite games, but tbh I think every game from that era that plays like Baldurs Gate sucks in the actual game department. Which is why people say to be a mage in this one, because the combat isn’t great, but especially as a fighter. Ultimately, the writing is what carries it.

EDIT: To add onto this, even though the overall gameplay is kinda bad (I think real time with pause is the worst control scheme in video games), it does do some subversive stuff with the writing that takes advantage of games in ways that you couldn’t with other media. I can’t say without spoilers, but because a theme in the game is that belief dictates reality (to an extent), some cool things can happen from your dialogue options that may otherwise seem mundane.

For those who have played, I'm referring to

      Adahn.
